[the bride says] The Beginnings of a Destination Wedding | Ashley

Posted on February 6, 2013 by steph in the bride says 2 Comments

What a crazy couple of weeks! A few days before Christmas, I was approached with an amazing career opportunity- the chance to produce for The Weather Channel! The job would mean moving from DC to Atlanta, and Joe and I had some concerns about what the move would mean for his job with the U.S. Forest Service. We were thrilled when his boss gave the stamp of approval, allowing Joe to work out of a regional office in Atlanta. I accepted the job, and last week we made the move! We are having a great time exploring our new city and love our new home- but the transition did put wedding planning on hold for a few weeks.

Fortunately, we have plenty of time! We got engaged this past September, and are planning a March 2014 wedding in Key West, Florida. We weren’t sure where we’d be living at the time of our wedding, but we knew it wouldn’t be Key West- so we decided to work with a local wedding planner. Erica with Simply You Weddings will be helping us coordinate both the big and the small details, everything from budgeting to table and chair rentals. With planning a destination wedding, I knew we would face the challenge of not being able to meet with vendors face to face- and that’s where Erica comes in. She’s based in Key West and works with the local businesses on a daily basis.

Now the fun part! So far we have two major details booked: the wedding and reception sites. We’ll say “I do” with our toes in the sand, on the spot where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Atlantic Ocean. Then, we’ll dance the night away with our closest family and friends at the spot Ernest Hemingway once called home (see the photos below!). The home and grounds have been turned into a museum, and feature GORGEOUS gardens. Oh- and six-toed cats, which are descendents of Hemingway’s own pet kitties! We haven’t worked out a guest list yet, but hope to keep things small, between 50 and 75 in attendance. That will be our next task: paring down the list, then designing and sending Save-The-Dates!
